Asturias by Isaak Albeniz – John Williams Guitar

AsturiasAsturias is one of Spanish impressionists music scores from piano transcripts, that in many cases usually sounds much much better on the guitar (in E minor), then on the piano, for which it was originally written, (in G minor) by Isaac Albéniz. E minor is before everything, a much brighter tonality and it’s more “alive” for this type of music pieces from his “Spanish Suite”. But what is the most important is the fact that with the excessive use of the open strings and accentuated harmonics, E minor open bass strings will make every possible guitar note – sound to it’s maximum, while in G minor, we can’t even reach the needed notes, and it would sound like some different song. Only the melody reminds of Asturias, and the music is almost beyond recognition, because of the color of the tonality…
Unbelievable, but the best guitarist for Spanish classics is an Englishman. Such precision and massive tone – just like the Ramirez Guitar he plays. The majority of famous Spanish “classical guitar pieces” are in fact, transcriptions from the piano score. John Williams is so great at it, that it sounds like the music was written for the guitar in the first place…
