Concierto De Aranjuez by Joaquin Rodrigo is one of the most interesting concerts for classical guitar. I graduated on Conservatorio De Liceo De Barcelona with it, from the second attempt. First I tried to present it in March 2000 and failed. I played terribly, so they did the only thing possible. Then I went home and practiced for 14 hours per day, and tried again in June, got a 6.2, and I said “great”…! It was so difficult, that I never thought of repeating this exam, to perhaps get a higher note. I should also mention that I had the best tutoring that can exist – composer Joaquin was a good friend with a famous Spanish guitarist Graciano Tarrago during the ’50s, who was my professor Jaume Torrent’s teacher. I heard stuff “directly” from Rodrigo, that were “third hand” information, in fact, Rodrigo to Tarrago, Tarrago to Jaume, and Jaume to me. Rodrigo was blind, of course, but he wrote this piece like he was mad. First, his orchestration is just terrible. You can’t hear the guitar properly, because the arrangement is completely crowded in some places. Then the guitar part itself, it’s so “un-guitaristic”, and the left-hand fingering is just plain – impossible. Don’t get me wrong, I love this concert, but these notes cannot be played properly the way they are written. The challenge here was to make it sound playable and easy, despite the completely impossible arrangement. This masterpiece was best played by Paco De Lucia, definitely. That’s because the first and the third movement are in “tempus perfectum”, and three-quarters rhythm, like any buleria flamenca…
Concierto De Aranjuez de Joaquin Rodrigo es uno de los conciertos mas interesantes para la guitarra y orquesta. Primero intente a presentarlo en Marzo de 2000, y falle. Toque terible, asi que hicieron la unica cosa posible. Entonces probe de nuevo en Junio, consegi un 6.2, y dije “estupendo”…! Fue tan dificil, que nunca pense a repetir el examen, para quizas obtener una nota mas alta. Deberia mencionar que tube la mejor enseñanza que existe – el compositor Joaquin fue buen amigo con un guitarrista Español famoso Graciano Tarrago durante los 50, quien fue el profesor de mi profesor Jaume. Sobre Concierto De Aranjuez oi cosas “directamente” de Rodrigo, las que fueron “informaciones de tercera mano” realmente, de Rodrigo a Tarrago, de Tarrago a Jaume, y de Jaume a mi. Rodrigo fue ciego, claro, pero escribio esta pieza como si fuera loco. Primero, la orquestacion es terrible, simplemente. No se puede oir la guitarra bien, porque el arreglo esta completamente concurrido en algunos sitios. Luego, la parte de la guitarra, es tan poco guitarristica, y la digitacion de la mano izquerda es imposible simplemente. No me entiendan malamente, a mi me encanta este concierto, pero estas notas no se pueden tocar propiamente tal como estan escritas. El reto aqui fue hacerlo sonar tocable y facil, a pesar del arreglo que es completamente imposible. Esta obra de arte fue mejor tocada por Paco De Lucia, definitivamente. Esto es porque el primero y el tercer movimiento estan en “tempus perfectum”, y en el compas – tres por cuatro, como buleria flamenca cualquiera…
