John McLaughlin

John McLaughlin is an English guitarist we can not forget to mention when the development of the guitar is in question. He reached amazing technique abilities with a pick, perhaps the best that anybody ever has. Although many people call “sport” his fast playing scales and passages, his musicality can simply – not be overlooked. He was always at the frontlines as far as music gear is concerned, with all possible MIDI systems that came out on the market, all from the ’70s, towards the new millennium…
His collaboration with Paco De Lucia was an accident, in fact, when the famous guitar trio idea appeared for the first time, it included a classical guitarist – John Williams. He turned down the proposal, (why am I not surprised..?) so the John McLaughlin or the Lary Coriel or Al Di Meola and Paco De Lucia were more than enough musician’s material to create the famous trio from the 1980s…
I so enjoy in their performance still, just like I did when I was a kid, and when it all sounded like magic to me. Nowadays, there are places that I could do better than Al sometimes, or “I could play better rhythm than John here”, it is logical that the magic is lost because I play the damn arrangements on a daily bases. But their energy, their smiles, and the whole idea of putting 3 monstrously good musicians on stage at once is SUCH A BRILLIANT IDEA, that I can’t believe that someone hasn’t had even remotely a similar idea for the past 4 decades…
Od course, John had a very rich career of his own, improvising with the famous musicians from India in the 70’s. But the breakthrough with the famous guitar trio did more for both him and Al and even Lary than it had an influence on the career of Paco De Lucia.
